Comments Sought on Draft Environmental Assessment
for a Shoreline Protection Project at Brice Prairie
Barrier Islands in Navigation Pool 7, La Crosse County, Wisconsin

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking comments from the public on a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and a range of alternatives for protecting eroding sections of shoreline along the Brice Prairie Barrier Islands Complex and to widen/deepen sections of the adjoining Brice Prairie Channel. The Brice Prairie Barrier Islands are located in Lake Onalaska, Navigation Pool 7.

This island complex protects a diverse plant community which provides habitat for fish, waterfowl, other migratory birds, furbearers, and amphibians.

The draft EA evaluates three alternatives, including the proposed alternative. The proposed alternative would address the problem by constructing rock wedge along sections of eroding shoreline. Widening and deepening the Brice Prairie Channel would occur in two locations. Another alternative evaluates using rock mounds or a combination rock wedge/mound to stabilize the eroding sections of shoreline, and also includes more channel dredging in one location. Under the third alternative, or the "no action" alternative, no action would be taken to protect the shoreline or widen/deepen sections of the channel that are filling.

Funding for the project is through a special appropriation to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to repair damage on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge resulting from the spring 2001 flood.

The draft EA is available below.  Copies of the EA are also available for review at the Town Hall in Midway, or at the La Crosse District Office, located at 555 Lester Avenue, Onalaska, WI, 54650.

Written comments on the draft EA will be accepted through August 30, 2004. Written comments should be sent to Jim Nissen at the following address: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, La Crosse District, 555 Lester Avenue, Onalaska, WI 54650 or via electronic mail at James_Nissen@fws.gov.
