Volunteers are vital in assisting Mingo National Wildlife Refuge fulfill its mission “to conserve, protect, and enhance fish and wildlife and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people”.

In 2006, volunteers donated over 8,000 hours in projects that included interpretation, environmental education, trail construction and maintenance, carpentry, historic restoration, food plot management, managed hunts, and many special events.

The Refuge welcomes volunteers in a variety of areas. Opportunities include the following:

  • Interpretation and Environmental Education – update signs and kiosks; provide computer support; assist with educational programs and teacher orientation; lead field trips and assist with special events, such as Ecology Days and Eagle Days.

  • Resource Management –assist with wildlife surveys and water level management; help control invasive species; and other biological activities.

  • Maintenance – assist with trail maintenance, building maintenance, mowing and trimming, and other construction projects.

  • Administration – assist employees with answering telephones, filing, data input and other office duties.

Electric and water hook ups are available for recreational vehicles and tent campers at the Refuge.
