Asian
Carp Corral
The 2nd Annual Carp Corral took place in June 10-13
2003, in the Illinois Waterway System during the Goby
Roundup. Nearly 50 biologists from the USFWS and nine
other federal, state and local agencies helped monitor
both of these activities. The Carp Corral, a 4-day survey
was completed to determine the range and relative abundance
of the Asian carp in the Waterway. Sampling for carp
was widely scattered in the Calumet-Sag Channel, the
Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, the Des Plaines River
and the Illinois River. Sampling gear consisted of a
trawl and trammel, gill, and fyke nets set overnight.
Tissue samples were taken to screen for viral and bacterial
pathogens and parasites. No Asian carp were collected
from the Cal Sag Canal, Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal,
or the Des Plaines River however; a bighead carp was
caught in 2002 near Channahon, Illinois. Asian carp
still appear to be about 21 miles south of the electrical
fish barrier and 50 miles from Lake Michigan. In the
Illinois River near La Salle and Peru, about 100 miles
from Lake Michigan, bighead carp, silver carp, and grass
carp were caught in abundance. This is a chronology of the progression of the Asian Carp up the Illinois
River.
