Management on Military Installations

Carterville FWCO assists with the management of fisheries for two military installations; Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Illinois and Naval Support Activity Crane in Crane, Indiana.  Annual spring time electrofishing surveys are performed by our biologists each year to monitor the fish populations in multiple ponds at each base.  We prepare management reports for both installations detailing information about the fish populations and recommendations for management actions based on results of the electrofishing surveys.  Carterville FWCO also assists these military bases with other activities as needed (i.e. fish stocking, pond restoration).

Management of Federal Lands (CONWR)

Carterville FWCO assists the state of Illinois with management activities on Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge in Marion, IL.  While the state receives funding to perform the management on the refuge, Carterville takes an active role in providing equipment and assisting with activities.  Annual management practices on the refuge includes electrofishing surveys on 3 main lakes and several small fishing ponds, fish stocking, habitat improvements, and vegetation control.
