Karner Blue Butterfly

Researchers

Peter Bakken

Superintendent: Black River State Forest

KBB research/management work:

Presence/absence surveys - to locate where karners are found on the State Forest and to prevent damage to their populations during our timber sale and resource management activities. This year we will focus on estimating populations and locating the best areas to serve as recovery areas. This will likely dovetail with our barrens management activities.

Significant findings:

Our main finding has been to locate where Karners are most commonly found on the property. This summers surveys will determine which of these best serve as population centers for recovery.
