What Do Volunteers Do?

Volunteers do many different things around the refuge...

Bertrand Artifacts Preservation - Staff Photo Museum Specimen Care - Staff Photo

From helping preserve artifacts from the Bertrand, taking care of bird specimens, helping maintain trails, lake shore cleanup, checking nest boxes, assisting with bird counts, prairie seed collecting, working with school groups, and many, many other activities.

How Much Time Do I Need to Spend?

During 2007, 394 volunteers logged 3,996 hrs. In 2008, 3,959 hours were logged by 342 volunteers. You can spend as much time as you wish - help on a single project or on many different projects, it's up to you.

 

Volunteer of the Year - Some volunteers who have shown particular dedication to helping with various projects around the refuge are recognized for their contribution to the refuge. Here is a list of volunteers who have been recognized the past 9 years.

The Boys and Girls Town of Omaha, Nebraska received the Volunteer of the Year award for 2009. The Boys and Girls Town group have been volunteering at DeSoto since 2004 marking their 5th anniversary of dedicated volunteer service to DeSoto NWR. To date, approximately 900 volunteers have contributed well over 3,000 hours of volunteer service performing litter patrol, seed collecting, thistle digging and assisting with special events on Refuge! CONGRATULATIONS!

 

 

 

 


How Do I Become a Volunteer?

Become a DeSoto volunteer by completing an application and agreement. For minors, a parental consent form is required. Open and print the application, fill in your information and mail it or drop it off at the Visitor Center.
