Fire Management
Region 3 has an exceptional fire program. The region manages a well planned and safety oriented fire management program on thousands of acres of National Wildlife Refuges and Wetland Management Districts. Critical habitat is maintained and fire adapted ecosystems restored predominately through the use of prescribed fire. No other Federal Agency utilizes prescribed fire to the extent the Fish and Wildlife service does. The threat of wildfire is reduced to rural communities adjacent to our refuges through the Community Assistance program most notably by the Rural Fire Assistance grants.
In order to successfully manage a complex fire program, critical positions in the fire management organization are necessary. They include the field office positions of Prescribed Fire Specialist, Fire Management Officer, Zone Fire Management Officer, and Range Technicians. The Regional Office administrative and Coordinator positions include; Regional Fire Management Coordinator, Regional Wildland Urban Interface Coordinator, Regional Fire Ecologist and the Regional Fire Program Specialist.
