Featured Story The Kickapoo-Griffin Wetland Restoration Projects consists of a 10-acre wetland restoration as well as a 9-acre prairie restoration with more projects being planned. The site has been drained in the past for farming and grazing but has not been actively farmed in 15 years. The wetland restoration consists of a ditch plug and a shallow scrape along the Kickapoo River near the Kickapoo High School south of Viola. An additional 12 acres was donated by Majestic Homes Inc. and the site is adjacent to 30 acres of restored wetland enrolled in the USDA Wetland Reserve Program. The purpose of the restoration project is to provide breeding grounds and migration habitat for waterfowl and wetland associated wildlife. Because of its proximity to a public school, the project also has an important educational aspect and gives the public a chance for wildlife viewing. Plans include construction of hiking trails, an observation platform, and a vehicle pull off. Partners included Kickapoo Schools, the Helen Griffith estate, Kickapoo-Griffin Land Stewardship Management Team, DNR, NRCS, Ducks Unlimited, and the Vernon County Land Conservation Department. photo of Kickapoo restoration by Daniel Chroninger |
