Using Technology to Go Outside

Grap your GPS unit or come and check out one of ours (Winona Office)
and explore the refuge. You can also track our
Migrating Travel Bugs and Geocoins at the geocaching website.

EarthCaches

An EarthCache involves using a gps unit to go to a certain location. Before going to the location the user needs to research the EarthCache and perform the educational lesson at the site. Visitors to the refuge EarthCaches will discover unique land features, geological processes, and a treasured landscape. Below are the links to the EarthCaches the refuge staff have created for you. For more information about EarthCaches, visit http://www.earthcache.org/.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a high-tech scavenger hunt. It involves using a hand-held Global Positiong System (GPS) unit to find a specific place on the refuge. At the location there will be a geocache (a container) with a log book. Visitors are not allowed to place their own geocaches on the refuge. The refuge staff have placed a few geocaches on the refuge to get you connected to the resource. Use your GPS and go outside! To learn more about geocaching go to: www.geocaching.com

What are our Migrating Travel Bugs and Geocoins?

Our travel bugs are stuffed animals. Each is equipped with a trackable dog tag called a Travel Bug. The tag allows a person to track where our tiny stuffed birds travel. Each Travel Bug bird and Blue Goose Geocoin has a mission to travel to a National Wildlife Refuge in every state. To learn more go to www.geocaching.com
