The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands works to strengthen public awareness and appreciation for the role wetlands play in sustaining environmental health, economic enterprise and recreational well-being. Signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971, the Convention is an intergovernmental treaty which provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation of wetlands and their resources.
