Volunteers

A knowledgeable and dedicated staff of volunteers donate many hours of their time each year, helping to make your visit to Tamarac a fond memory. They assist with public use and environmental education programs, wildlife management activities, trail maintenance and clerical work.

How would you like to join our volunteer staff and be a positive force in preserving this Nation's wildlife resources at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge?

Projects vary according to the needs of the Refuge and the interests and abilities of the volunteers. While there are no age limits, anyone under 18 years of age must have written parental approval. Organized group participation is welcomed and encouraged.

What you would have to provide:

  • Your time.
  • Your own transportation.
  • Your skills, knowledge and enthusiasm.

What Tamarac Refuge will provide:

  • A volunteer opportunity that matches your abilities and interests to the needs of the Refuge.
  • Orientation to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Training for the volunteer opportunity you select.
  • A volunteer agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which covers you for injuries incurred while on the job.
  • Recognition and thanks for your contribution to the refuge.

Volunteers perform a wide variety of tasks including:

  • Duck banding.
  • Conduct wildlife surveys.
  • Leading tours and providing information and interpretation to the visiting public.
  • Provide environmental education to the public.
  • Facilities and grounds maintenance.
  • Bookshop duties.
  • Clerical duties.
