Conservation Planning Assistance
Conservation Planning biologists work directly with Federal agencies on development projects to ensure that the environment and our natural resources are protected. We help project proponents, planners, and other agencies develop plans that conserve, restore or enhance fish and wildlife while accomplishing the objectives of the proposed development. Our work includes reviewing and providing recommendations on plans and development designs, crafting mitigation plans, providing expertise in wildlife and habitat science, and serving as members on planning teams.

Biologists and other personnel from several agencies and organizations capture federally listed endangered Indiana bats from Blackball Mine in central Illinois to attached radio transmitters. Receivers in aircraft, vehicles, and by ground crews use the transmitters to track the distribution and movement of the bats. The Indiana bats use the mine site to hibernate over winter and use certain trees during the summer to raise their young. The results of the bat surveys help avoid and minimize effects to bats for Federal construction and energy projects including wind energy.
