Most National Wildlife Refuges and Waterfowl Production Areas are open to the public for wildlife-dependent recreation.

 

National Wildlife Refuges and Waterfowl Production Areas are generally open to the public for a variety of recreational activities.

These lands host 6.5 million visitors that come to watch wildlife, learn through interpretive programs, hunt, fish, or seek simple solitude from everyday life.

Features

In response to litigation by The Fund for Animals, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agreed to revise environmental assessments completed for hunting programs on 74 national wildlife refuges.

Nine of those refuges are in the Midwest Region.
