Looking to the Future

Photo of farm land beside prairieSave What's Left ...

Only by working with landowners can we protect what remains of the Tallgrass Prairie. With landowners as partners, protection can come from short-term agreements or long-term easements to save these scattered tracts of prairie. Purchase of some lands may be needed to prevent further loss. These lands will be acquired only from willing landowners and at fair market value.

... Improve Some of the Best ...

The vigor and productivity of Tallgrass Prairie remnants can be improved and maintained through periodic prescribed burning, rest-restoration grazing, or mowing. Through the combined efforts of both public and private organizations, areas or remnant prairie, whether located on public or private lands, can be enriched each year.

... Restore a Portion of the Rest

Where important, native Tallgrass Prairie grasses and forbs will be planted to enhance the biological value and diversity of existing remnant tracts. Prepared seed beds, local native seed, use of specialized seed drills and good weed control during the first few years will help spread the prairie bloom.
