Environmental Education

Educators are encouraged to bring their students to Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. We hope that by experiencing the refuge through their natural sense of discovery, students will make important connections with their natural world.

Eco Discovery Programs

Our programs range in topic, but are meant to align themselves with your current curriculum and units. From birds to insects and habitats to endangered species, the Eco Discovery series of programs was developed to be a supplement for your classroom, encouraging that important link to the environment.

The length of the program is ultimately up to you, but can range from 30 minutes to a few hours to a full day at the refuge. We are interested in working with you to offer our resources. One idea would be to integrate one of our programs as an informal presentation to terminology and concepts as an introduction to a future unit. These programs are also a great way to enhance interdisciplinary learning about nature and connections.

To learn more about these programs please see the Eco Discovery Program brochure (pdf file 2.63Mb) or contact Katie Goodwin at 608-565-4403. We would also be available to come to your school to discuss these programs with you and your staff if needed at a staff meeting or inservice day.

Field Trips

Necedah National Wildlife Refuge invites school groups, scout groups, families, and civic organizations to take a field trip to the refuge. The refuge offers a great outdoor classroom for hands-on explorations of savanna, sedge meadows, and wetland habitats. A wide variety of habitat and wildlife programs are available and can be tailored to fit your needs. Please contact us at 608-565-2551 to schedule your program. Advanced registration is required for all field trips.

Teachers and group leaders can take advantage of the many environmental education facilities located at the Refuge.  These include:

  • Visitor Center
  • Environmental Outdoor Lab
  • A wetlands observation deck
  • Rynearson Wetlands Observation Tower and Trail
  • Boghaunter Trails
  • Lupine Loop Trail
  • Sprague and Goose Pools
  • Restrooms

Environmental education facilities are accessible and programs can be adjusted for specific needs during reservation.

Please contact the Refuge at 608-565-2551 or email the Visitor Services Manager for additional information and assistance.

Teacher Workshops

The refuge is in the process of developing Teaching In The Outdoors workshops. These workshops will help teachers become comfortable teaching in the outdoors and using the refuge's 44,000-acres as a teaching tool. Interested parties are welcome to contact Katie Goodwin by calling 608-565-2551 for information and planning.

Traveling Trunks

A traveling trunk is a large box or trunk containing lesson plans, props, and activities that make learning come alive in the classroom. Each trunk is filled with educational materials such as animal hides, age-appropriate lesson plans, posters, videos, games and puppets. The refuge has five traveling trunks: whooping crane, wolf, prairie, bear, and wetlands. Download the Trunk Brochure for additional information.

Trunks can be borrowed for two (2) to three (3) weeks free of charge statewide to teachers and organizations. Shipping of a trunk from the refuge is free thanks to a generous contribution from the Friends of Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. These trunks can also be picked up at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Those interested in renting a trunk may contact the refuge by email or by calling (608) 565-2551.
