Public Comment Sought on Draft
Environmental Assessment for Recreational
Fishing Plan at Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge

The Service is seeking public comment on a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed Recreational Fishing Plan at Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Alexander, Johnson, Pulaski, and Union Counties, Illinois.

The draft EA considers two action Alternatives and the "No Action" Alternative.  Alternative A (Proposed Action) would establish a year round recreational fishing program on Cypress Creek NWR.  Only minimal time and space restrictions would be imposed, if necessary, to minimize wildlife disturbance or user conflicts.  All seasons would be coordinated with and within the framework of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  Alternative C would also allow recreational fishing on all areas of the refuge, but would restrict the fishing season from March 15 to September 30.  The "No Action" Alternative (B) would continue current fishing closure on the refuge.

A copy of the draft EA and the Fishing Plan are provided below.   Printed copies of the EA can also be obtained from Cypress Creek NWR, 137 Rustic Campus Drive, Ullin, IL 62992 or by telephoning (618-634-2231).  Comments on the draft EA are welcome and may be submitted to the address above, by fax (618-634-9656), or by e-mail to:  dennis_sharp@fws.gov  .  All comments must be received by Mr. Sharp no later than Monday, January 5, 2004.
