Minnesota Valley NWR/WMD 2008 Resource Management Internships

Location: Minnesota Valley National Wildlife
Refuge/Wetland Management District (Refuge/WMD) in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan Area, is just down the street from the Mall of America but is a haven to bald eagles, river otters, migratory birds, and a variety of other wildlife. The Refuge comprises over 14,000 acres which lie along a 34-mile stretch of the Minnesota River. The habitat is a mixture of wetlands, floodplain and upland forest, oak savanna and prairie.
Duties: Interns will assist in a diversity of Refuge management activities which may include waterfowl and shorebird surveys, invertebrate and plant monitoring, water level management, invasive species control, amphibian monitoring, trail maintenance, duck banding, public education, posting boundaries, etc. Interns will work with Refuge staff, other interns and Refuge volunteers.
Benefits: Housing provided in a newly constructed
dorm located amidst the prairie of our Rapids Lake Unit in Jordan, Minnesota. Although government vehicles will be provided for official duties, a personal vehicle is recommended for non-duty activities. The internship will generally run 12 weeks from late May-August, with the intern being paid a stipend of $100 per week. Work schedule will be 40 hours per week and may include occasional evenings/weekends. Staff will work with students to fulfill internship credit requirements at universities, including assigning independent projects.
Qualifications: Interested applicants should be physically fit, able to work independently or in small groups, have excellent verbal/writing skills, and have a background in biology, botany, forestry, ecology, or a related field. Basic computer skills and a valid driver's license are required. Experience in operating canoes, ATV's, farm equipment, mowers, and GPS and GIS should be noted on resume.

Duties: Interns will assist Minnesota Valley NWR staff in a diversity of Environmental Education projects including: curriculum development, program presentations, Partner School Program development, staffing the Visitor Center information desk, and assistance with public special events.
