Environmental Education and Interpretation

With a little advance notice and preparation, staff from the Middle Mississippi River NWR are happy to provide outdoor classroom learning events for local schools.

Currently, we have a partnership with the small rural Christ Lutheran School located in Jacob, Illinois. Refuge staff provide environmental education programs each semester to the students through field trips to the nearby Wilkinson Island Division. These events include hands-on learning opportunities such as water quality sampling, tree identification, wildlife observation (including eagle tours) and fisheries surveys.

" Project Wet" is an environmental education field trip for junior high school students.

Please contact the refuge manager if your school is interested in using the refuge for an outdoor classroom.
