Partnership

The Middle Mississippi River Partnership (MMRP) is a collection of State, Federal, and non-governmental organizations who have come together to establish a general framework of cooperation to achieve a common goal of restoring or otherwise enhancing the natural resources of America's greatest river.

The partners aim to achieve this goal through public resource management, resource compatible economic development, private lands conservation, and education and outreach.

The scope of the Middle Mississippi River Partnership has been defined as the lands and waters between the bluffs from the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers south to the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

The goals of the partnership members are:

  1. To work cooperatively with the Partnership for restoration and improvement of aquatic and riparian resources within the Middle Mississippi River corridor.

  2. To meet with representatives of the Partnership periodically to review joint opportunities for conservation planning and development of shared implementation strategies on issues of mutual concern.

  3. To enter into subsequent agreements as needed to accomplish specific projects or to provide funds, materials, and expertise for mutual support of the Partnership purposes.

In July 2002, an inaugural meeting formed the MMRP and, since then, the members have held general meetings twice a year. In June 2003, Southern Illinois University hosted the first annual Middle Mississippi River Workshop in Carbondale, Illinois.

A Memorandum of Understanding is currently circulating for signature by each of the partnering organizations, and steps are underway to create a "vision document" that will outline the overall goals of the partnership. Ad-hoc committees have been formed in response to specific opportunities, and meet on an as-needed basis to accomplish specific partnership goals.
