The Litchfield Wetland Management District, a land management office of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, was established in 1978 to manage, preserve and protect habitat critical to waterfowl and other prairie wildlife.
The District manages 152 separate parcels of federally owned land called Waterfowl Production Areas covering more than 35,000 acres in Kandiyohi, McLeod, Meeker, Renville, Stearns, Todd and Wright counties in south-central Minnesota.
In addition to buying land for public use, the District also protects over 13,000 acres of privately owned wetland and grassland habitat by purchasing permanent easements that restore and protect habitat. The land remains in private ownership but protects the integrity of the wetlands and associated uplands for wildlife.
In addition, our Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program offers landowners technical assistance and funding for habitat restoration projects on private lands.
