Fish Passage

old dam modified to create fish passage
Old dam refurbished to allow fish passage.

Fish Passage is an area of fisheries that is getting considerable attention and has helped to restore depleted fish populations. For many species, it takes more than clean water or regulations on harvest to restore populations. Often the critical problem is a blockage to important fish habitat. This is when a fish passage project can do so much to help restore a population. Across the nation fishery managers are discovering the benefits of a well developed fish passage project.

Recently La Crosse FRO partnered with the White Earth DNR and the Minnesota DNR to construct a rock rapid fish passage structure on the White Earth River. This project made it possible for fish to migrate from the Red River once again. This effort will also improve the likelihood of success for the lake sturgeon restoration program for in Red River Watershed. La Crosse FRO has also contributed funds and technical expertise to several other fish passage projects in Wisconsin and Iowa.
