Help Wanted! The following is a list of volunteer jobs that are available at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge, which is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The refuge depends on the help of many talented volunteers to preserve, protect and enhance wildlife for future generations - we hope you'll join us! For more information or to sign up, please call 920-387-2658 ext. 24 or check out http://www.volunteer.gov/gov. Habitat Marsh Steward - Help keep the refuge clean - pick up litter at a trail or site. (Year-round) Green Thumb - Prune, trim and weed landscaped areas around the visitor center. (Late spring and summer) Weed Warrior - Monitor and/or remove invasive plant species like purple loosestrife, wild parsnip, European buckthorn and garlic mustard. Training and equipment provided. (Late spring through fall) Seed Harvester - Help collect and process native prairie seeds for restoration projects on the refuge. (Fall) Grassland Vegetation Surveyor - Perform grassland vegetation surveys throughout the refuge. Must be knowledgeable in plant identification. (Late July through September) Aquatic Vegetation Surveyor - Perform aquatic vegetation surveys throughout the refuge. Must be knowledgeable in plant identification. (June through September) Wildlife Carp Trapper - Assist refuge staff with the monitoring and removal of carp at the trap on the Rock River near the auto tour route. (Late spring and summer) Nestbox Monitor - Monitor and clean bluebird and wood duck nest boxes on the refuge. (Late winter, spring and summer) Brood Surveyor - Perform brood surveys of nesting ducks throughout the refuge. Must be knowledgeable in duck identification. (Late June through early July) Administration Data Entry - Several projects to choose from: waterfowl survey data, bluebird boxes, mailing lists, etc. Computer experience desired. (Year-round) Office Assistant - Assist with general office tasks such as filing, copying, mailings, organizing, etc. (Year-round) Maintenance Maintenance Assistant - Assist maintenance staff with upkeep of refuge facilities, including painting, repair, carpentry projects and general maintenance. (Year-round) Outreach and Education (Visitor Services) Field Trip Assistant - Help prepare for, assist with or lead school field trip programs at public use sites throughout the refuge. Training and materials provided. (Weekends/weekdays, Year-round) Special Event Assistant - Help prepare for and assist with interpretive programs and special events at the refuge. (Weekends/weekdays, Year-round) Refuge Reader - Read nature stories aloud regularly to the same group of children at a local school, shelter or Head Start with emphasis on Horicon refuge. (Weekdays, Year-round) Visitor Center Staff - Provide information to visitors and sell merchandise from Coot's Corner Bookstore at refuge visitor center. Training provided (Year-round) Roving Ranger - Welcome visitors at public use areas. Hand out maps and brochures, answer questions about the refuge and surrounding area and report visitor numbers and activities. Training provided. (Weekends, Late April - June, September - early November) |
