Management Partners Workgroup

This Workgroup will be established in early 2007 by invitation from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Their overall function is to assist in the development, over the next 3 years, of a comprehensive, ecosystem-based state-wide Mitchell's satyr butterfly Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP).  Members include public and private partners with experience in land management for Mitchell’s satyr butterflies and a history of interacting with other stakeholders.

During the course of management for Mitchell’s satyr butterflies, certain management techniques pose the risk of ‘taking’ Mitchell’s satyr butterflies in either the egg, larval, or adult form. Taking can include killing or otherwise harming individuals of the species, and is prohibited by the Endangered Species Act except under permit. An Incidental Take Permit may be issued to facilitate management that could result in take, but a Habitat Conservation Plan must first be developed to identify measures that minimize adverse impacts to the species. Once the Habitat Conservation Plan for Mitchell's satyr is approved, the benefits of an Incidental Take Permit could be extended to other landowners via Certificates of Inclusion.

The Management Partners Workgroup is expected to work interactively during the Habitat Conservation Plan development process to produce an HCP that is compatible with the needs of the various partners and those they represent.

Mitchell's Satyr Butterfly Recovery Working Group

The Mitchell’s Satyr Recovery Working Group was organized in the early 1990s to address the need for coordination among stakeholders interested in Mitchell's satyr management and recovery. The group meets annually to discuss Mitchell's satyr research, management, and conservation. Members of the group include scientists, landowners, land managers, and others interested in recovery of Mitchell’s satyr.
