Karner Blue Butterfly Manager

Paul Samerdyke

Wildlife Biologist - Waushara County

Karner blue butterfly research/management work:

Habitat manager and census collector

Wildlife Biologist and Property Manager for State-owned lands in Waushara and Northern Marquette Counties. The one state Wildlife Area in my jurisdiction is Greenwood WLA, on which we are managing about 800 acres of prairie and savanna. This is considered a recovery site for Karners, and as such we are constantly trying to enhance or expand Karner habitat. We will be doing distance sampling on this property this year.

The remainder of Karner habitat we deal with is on many of the scattered properties that were purchased with SFR dollars as riparian protection and public access on the trout streams in both counties. I work in parallel with Mike Engel in regards to these properties, as he can work with interspersed private landowners that have Karner habitat or potential. My feeling is that there is a fairly expansive Karner population in the Southern Waushara and Northern Marquette County area. The Mecan River and several of it's tributaries form the connective opportunity for habitat work, and that is one of our focus areas.
