Goose Bay Shoreline Stabilization and Habitat Enhancement Goose Bay Park, prior to rehabilitation, was badly eroding.
Goose Bay Park shoreline, after rehabilitation, is protected from erosion and enhanced for fish and wildlife habitat.
Goose Bay is one of the last remaining sheltered embayment habitats along the Detroit River. Goose Bay Park (0.9 ha), located at the foot of Pillette Road, is located in Goose Bay and is owned by the City of Windsor. By restoring and enhancing fish and wildlife habitat, the project will aid in delisting the impaired beneficial use "loss of fish and wildlife habitat".
Restoration and rehabilitation work involved the protection of the shoreline using rip-rap and native plants. This work also included submerged enhancements to improve fish spawning and refuge habitat. Submerged enhancements include groynes, rock apron, and cobble stone. Using these methods, the embayment is protected form swift current regimes and wave actions.
The work, costing $161,000 and completed in 2000, was funded by Environment Canada's Great Lakes Cleanup Fund and the City of Windsor. The implementation was carried out by the City's Parks and Recreation Department and the Essex Region Conservation Authority, with assistance from BTS Consulting (Windsor).
