Middle Basin Pallid Sturgeon Recovery Workgroup

The pallid sturgeon was listed as an Endangered species in 1990. An "endangered" species is one that is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. The threats which justified listing the pallid sturgeon included: Recovery plans list the tasks necessary to restore a species so that its survival in the wild is ensured. View the Pallid Sturgeon Recovery Plan for more details.

There are three regional workgroups comprised primarily of state, federal, and academic biologists that are conducting activities on pallid sturgeon. The Middle Basin Pallid Sturgeon Recovery Workgroup provides a forum for implementing pallid sturgeon recovery activities, prioritizing research and recovery actions, providing biological information necessary for recovery, and coordinating efforts within the Lower Missouri and Middle Mississippi River Basins. The workgroup communicates largely via phone and e-mail. Two formal meetings are held each year to allow scientists to present their work and promote idea sharing. Middle_Basin_Workgroup_roster.pdf provides a roster of participants.

Middle Basin Workgroup members participated in a survey to identify and prioritize the information needs for restoring pallid sturgeon populations. The workgroup will use these survey results to guide researchers and managers toward meeting the highest priority needs first, and coordinating research monitoring and assessment activities. The survey results are available at Middle_Basin_Workgroup_survey_results.pdf

Non governmental agencies and private individuals are encouraged to also get involved to promote a broad-based approach toward recovery of the pallid sturgeon.
