Outreach and Education

Columbia FRO provides outdoor and aquatic species educational programs to benefit schools, environmental conservation groups, and the general public. We can provide brochures, posters, and other hands on materials- as well as actual live or preserved fish specimens. We also staff information booths at the Missouri River Natural Resources Conference, Midwest Fish & Wildlife Conference, and American Fisheries Society meetings. We actively recruit college students for the Student Temporary Experience Program and volunteer positions at the Missouri Natural Resources Conference Student Job Fair.

We assist the staffs of Big Muddy, Swan Lake, and DeSoto Refuges with Free Fishing Clinics for local youths. Columbia FRO assists with knot tying, fish handling and fish identification. Photo of happy young angler learning to tie knots at one of the DeSoto Refuge's fishing clinics.

We also work with University of Missouri-Columbia Fish Management students. Students are required to job shadow a fisheries professional as part of this class. We partner with Neosho National Fish Hatchery to host pallid sturgeon stocking events. Members of the public are encouraged to help us release endangered pallid sturgeon into the Missouri River at the annual events. Community

We assist Missouri River Relief with annual trash cleanup events on the Missouri River. Our staff ferry community volunteers along several river miles during this day-long beautification effort. This event gives our staff the opportunity to share our experiences on the river with others. Trash collected from Missouri River banks by community volunteers during River Relief cleanup.
