Lakeside Daisy
(Hymenoxys acaulis var. glabra)
This plant occurs in dry prairies underlain by limestone or dolomitic bedrock. Isolated historical populations were known from Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. In addition to an already small historical range, habitat destruction and grazing effects are believed to have caused declines in this species. It was listed as threatened in 1988.
Natural populations of this plant are believed to have been extirpated in northeast Illinois. However, several local efforts to re-establish long-term viable populations in county forest preserves are underway. The Chicago Illinois Field Office has worked with other Service offices to address range-wide conservation and recovery needs of this species.

Locally, we work with species experts and recovery team members on staff at the Morton Arboretum and the Forest Preserve District of Will County to consider measures to conserve and expand remaining populations of this species.
