Outdoor Women at Big Oaks NWR
Participants (what to bring) Course Descriptions
Big Oaks Conservation Society and Big Oaks NWR are hosting this outdoor learning event just for women on June 7, 2008 (7:45 AM to 4:45 PM). The event will be held at Big Oaks NWR. “Outdoor Women at Big Oaks” is a one-day program that has been developed to offer women ages 14 and over a chance to learn and participate in outdoor skills and activities such as camping, backpacking, hunting, fishing, hiking, bird watching, archery, orienteering, muzzleloaders, sporting clays, canoeing, Dutch oven cooking and more. The event is organized by women for women who want to expand their outdoor skills in a fun, supportive environment.
Your registration fee includes: choice of 3 courses, lunch and refreshments, use of equipment and supplies, Big Oaks Conservation Society Annual Membership, Annual Entrance Permit to Big Oaks NWR
Early Bird Registration Deadline (before May 1): $45.00
Registration (May 1 - May 17): $50.00
COURSE SELECTIONS: Classes will be assigned on a first registered, first enrolled basis. Courses include: Basic fishing, bird watching and tree identification, orienteering with map and compass, native wildflowers and edibles, wilderness survival, hiking, Nordic trekking, backpacking and camping, GPS and geocaching, basic canoeing, deer hunting and turkey calling, basic beginning fly-fishing, basic archery, life in a creek, discovery nature walk, outdoor Dutch oven cooking, sporting clay shooting, backyards for wildlife habitat, and introduction to black powder muzzleloaders
You have the opportunity to take 3 classes; each 1 hour 50 minutes session is basic and will give you an introductory overview of the topic with varying amounts of hands-on experience. There will be a 10 minute break during and between each session. We will do everything possible to make sure that you get to attend the sessions you most prefer. However, class sizes are limited per session. An e-mail (or mailed letter if e-mail is not available) will be sent to you confirming your selections.
Every participant will be required to attend a safety and informational briefing from 8:10 a.m.–8:50 a.m.
**Please note, in arranging for arrival to Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge on the day of the event, travel time from the entrance of the refuge to the registration point at the Old Timbers Lodge will be an additional 25 minutes of travel time. Signs will be posted on the refuge to direct you to the lodge.**
