Cooperation with Native Americans
New FY 2008 Cooperation with Native Americans Activity Summary (pdf - 69 Kb)
Background
Conserving this Nation's fish and other aquatic resources cannot be successful without the partnership of federally recognized Tribal governments. They manage or influence some of the most important aquatic habitats both on and off reservations. In addition, the Federal government and the Service have distinct and unique obligations toward Tribal governments based on trust responsibility, treaty provisions, and statutory mandates.

Treaty Fishery Assistance Program
The Treaty Fishery Assistance Program provides technical assistance and support for federally recognized tribes in Michigan. Great Lakes fishery resources are important to the culture of native peoples for food and spiritual purposes. Because of the linkage, the service views its trust responsibilities to the Great lakes fishery resources and the tribal governments as one in the same. The Treaty Fishery Unit is a component of the Treaty Fishery Assistance Program. For recent information on station activities related to Cooperation with Native Americans, review our monthly station newsletter.
