Want to be a Volunteer on Midway Atoll NWR?

photo of volunteers outplanting
Although we would love to have an army of volunteers at Midway, unfortunately we only can accommodate a few volunteers (usually 2 or 3) at any one time. Our volunteers assist with habitat restoration, which includes growing plants in the greenhouse, outplanting plants, and hand-pulling verbesina and other nonnative plants. They also may help with seabird monitoring and marine debris removal.

We request a 12-week commitment. Volunteers must be able to get along well with others in a remote environment; be in good physical condition, have no significant medical issues; be able to swim, ride a bike, hike up to 3 miles a day in the sand, and lift 40 pounds.

Volunteer time periods and application dates:

• November - February, applications due between July 15 and August 15
• February - May, applications due between October 15 and November 15
• May - August, applications due between February 15 and March 15

If you are interested in more than one time period, a separate application for each time period is required. Because of the large number of applications received, preference will be given to those with a degree in a science related field.

We provide roundtrip airfare to Midway from Honolulu, and room and board while on Midway.

If this sounds exciting to you, please send me a brief resume, three work related references, with phone and e-mail, and your dates of availability.

Please be patient, due to the high demand for volunteer positions, it may take 2-4 weeks to respond to your request.
