The
Pacific Princess visited Midway Atoll on Wednesday,
June 1, 2005,
bringing people
to tour
the historic sites and wildlife spectacle on Sand Island.

Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge opened to visitors in August
1996, becoming the first remote island Refuge in the Pacific to
provide the general public with an opportunity to experience these
unique ecosystems. Unfortunately, in 2002, regularly scheduled visitor
programs were put on hold due to the departure of the cooperating
entity that managed those programs. The Fish and Wildlife Service
is strongly supportive of making regularly scheduled visitor opportunities
available again.
While a new
visitor program is under development, the Service continues to accommodate
visitors who make their way to Midway. Since 2002, more than 5,000
visitors have joined us on Midway, primarily via cruise ships crossing
the Pacific. Many of these visitors come to tour the Battle of Midway
National Memorial's historic resources and honor the memories of
those who fought in World War II. Sharing the atoll’s unsurpassed
wildlife resources and its varied history with visitors is important
to us, and we look forward to the day we can offer a regular visitor
program on Midway.
