Fuel No Longer Available at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge April 5, 2005 During ongoing discussions last month with the Department of Transportation regarding options to reduce costs of operating Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, the Fish and Wildlife Service made a decision to end fuel sales on the atoll after April 1. Both agencies agreed that the sale of fuels for ongoing revenue generation is not feasible due to high infrastructure costs and large quantity purchase requirements. A Notice to Airmen was issued on March 29 and became effective April 1. Henderson Airfield remains operational as an FAA certified commercial airfield for emergency ETOPS (Extended Twin-Engine Operations) purposes. |
