‘Ōhi‘a are found throughout the main Hawaiian Islands of Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i. It grows in a variety of environments including barren lava flows; dry, mesic, and wet forests; windswept slopes and ridges; and subalpine and mountain bogs. ‘Ōhi‘a are slow growing trees that are vulnerable to competition by faster growing invasive trees.
