Mattamuskeet Refuge Cleanup Planned
Cleanup of trash and fishing line, as well as general maintenance, will occur at several public use areas at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. To aid in this work, several public use areas will be temporarily closed as listed below:
August 10, 11, and 12 Farm Area Road and Lake Landing and Wauppopin water
control structures
August 17, 18, and 19 Mattamuskeet Lodge water control structure, Wildlife
Drive Bridge, and Central Canal
Future additional closures may be necessary if significant littering continues at these areas.
Refuge staff are working to improve the appearance of public use areas on the Refuge and to make them more inviting to the public. Any assistance by the public, including help with the pick up of litter or simply discouraging littering by others, would be greatly appreciated. Questions may be directed to Refuge Manager Bruce Freske at 252-926-4021.
