Deadlines for Mattamuskeet Goose and Deer Permit Hunts: August 1 and August 10, respectively. Don't be late!
Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge Permit Hunt applications now have earlier deadlines due to administrative changes in the application and payment processes. Prospective goose hunters may apply for the September Canada goose hunt from July 1 through August 1, 2011. And, prospective deer hunters may apply for the two two-day October deer hunts (Oct 11-12 and Oct 25-26) from July 1 through August 10, 2011. "We don't want people to miss out on these hunts because they send in their applications late and miss the deadlines," said Refuge Manager Deb Pierce. "The deadlines this year are a week or two earlier than they have been in the past. We'd really appreciate everyone's help in getting the word out."
For goose permits, hunters must apply through the NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Permit Hunting Opportunities Program (1-888-248-6834 or www.ncwildlife.org); the Canada Goose Hunt Item Number is 7047. The State charges an application fee of $5.00, and they will draw 100 applicants. Parties of up to five persons may apply. Successful applicants will be notified by mail by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and will be directed to submit a $12.50 per person fee to the Refuge in order to receive their permits. Permitted applicants may hunt Canada geese on the refuge from September 1 through September 30th Monday through Saturday. State limits apply.
Likewise, prospective deer hunters must apply for the two two-day October deer hunts through the NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Permit Hunting Opportunities Program (1-888-248-6834 or www.ncwildlife.org); the Deer Hunt Item Number is 7050. Applications may be made singly or by groups of up to five hunters. Successful applicants will be notified by mail by the Commission and will be directed to submit a $12.50 per person fee to the Refuge in order to receive their permits.
Permits are also available for waterfowl hunting on Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge; however, the deadlines for those applications have not changed.
Details for applying for these and other National Wildlife Refuge permit hunts are provided in the NC Wildlife Resources Commission publication found at the following link: http://www.ncwildlife.org/License/documents/PermitHunt/2011_12/Introduction-Application-Procedures.pdf.
