Wildlife Internships

(The internship program at Mattamuskeet is "on hold" until a new biologist is hired. Please check back periodically.)

When: Internships are available year-round. Typically, internships last 12-16 weeks.

Where: Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife, as well as wildlife-dependent recreational opportunities for visitors. The refuge is known among wildlife enthusiasts for the thousands of wintering waterfowl that it attracts each year. Mattamuskeet Refuge is located in Hyde County, North Carolina approximately 9 miles east of Swan Quarter, a rural coastal community.

Stipend: A stipend of $60.00 per week is paid to interns.

What: Interns gain valuable wildlife and natural resource management experience. A variety of work is possible: Assist refuge staff with activities including recording water quality measurements; maintaining and monitoring wood duck nesting boxes; conducting various wildlife surveys; assisting with wood duck, Canada goose, and tundra swan trapping and banding; conducting visitor tours; providing environmental education to children and the general public; supervising two youth conservation corp. enrollees in completing refuge maintenance projects; trash collection and facilities maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants should be majoring in a field related to natural resources such as wildlife management, fisheries, forestry, biology, zoology, or environmental studies. Applicants should be willing to do strenuous work outdoors in extreme weather conditions. A valid state driver license is required.


Housing: Free refuge housing with utilities is provided.
