Celebrating 100 Years of Conservation

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge kicked off it's "100 Years of Conservation" at the John Scharff Migratory Bird Festival in April. The main celebration of the Refuge's Centennial will be held September 19 and 20, 2008 at the Refuge.

Initial plans include dedication of a bronze statue donated by the Refuge's Friends Group The Malheur Wildlife Associates; placement of a centennial time capsule at Refuge Headquarters; archaeological excavations at the historic Sod House Ranch; educational talks about bird conservation by Trish Nixon of the Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey; children's activities and much more.

Stay tuned for more information about this fun event.

The Refuge's Cooperating Association, the Harney County Historical Society, has a wide variety of commemorative items available in the Refuge Visitor Center. Rogue Brewery has created "Great Egret Pale Ale" for the Refuge's Centennial. It is available at select Harney County retailers and from Rogue Brewery in Newport, Oregon.
