Species Lists and Project Reviews in Maine

Step 3

The IPaC information that you received is very broad. In this step you have the opportunity to provide us with more site specific information. In this step you have the opportunity to determine whether any federally listed or candidate species or their habitats actually occur within the action area for each species on your species summary table. First, review the species information provided in IPaC, the Maine Field Office listed species pages, and any other sources of information (e.g., habitat assessments) available to determine whether you can conclude whether your action area contains the species or its habitat. Is habitat for the listed or candidate species on your list present (e.g., Are young softwood forests present suitable for Canada lynx? Are river or streams nearby suitable for Atlantic salmon?). At this time, the Maine Field Office does not have the survey protocols for listed or candidate species or their habitats, but we are available to consult with you on appropriate methods. If you have questions regarding species survey methods, please contact our office for technical assistance.

(A) Is suitable habitat for listed or candidate species present in your action area?

If you can confirm that suitable habitat is absent within the action area, answer “no suitable habitat present” in the species summary table for the appropriate species under the column for Step 3A.

If you can confirm that suitable habitat is present within the action area, answer "suitable habitat present” in the species summary table for the appropriate species under the column for Step 3A. If you have done a habitat survey, append it to the project review package.

If there may be suitable habitat or if you are uncertain whether the habitat types within the action area may support any listed or candidate species, answer “don't know” in the species summary table for the appropriate species under the column for Step 3A. In this instance, a habitat survey may be recommended. Please contact our office for technical assistance.

(B) Does the species occur in your action area?

If you can confirm that the species is absent within the action area, answer “species not present” in the species summary table for the appropriate species under the column for Step 3B. If you have done a species survey, append this information to the project review package.

If you can confirm that species is present within the action area, answer "species present” in the species summary table for the appropriate species under the column for Step 3B. If you have done a species survey, append this information to the project review package.

If species may be present or if you are uncertain whether the species is present within the action area, answer “don't know” in the species summary table for the appropriate species under the column for Step 3B. In this instance, a species survey is recommended. Please consult our office for technical assistance.

When your species summary table (MS Word Format) is completed for all listed and candidate species, continue to Step 4.
