Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge Cancels “Open Roads” Event Scheduled for September 3-5, 2011.
Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge Manager Mike Hoff announced today that the Open Roads event scheduled to occur September 3 – September 5, 2011 is cancelled due to impacts from hurricane Irene. During the storm the refuge lost a large portion of the bulkhead protecting Live Oak Point. “Without this bulkhead in place, the shoreline has rapidly eroded and is within inches of taking the road visitors use to drive on” Hoff said. Currently the refuge is looking at ways to protect the road, repair the bulkhead, and return to a state where we can once again “Open Roads.”
