News Release

June 30, 2010

Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge will be unable to “Open Roads” this July 4th weekend.

Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge Manager Mike Hoff announced today that Open Roads Days normally held during the July 4th weekend will be cancelled due to an ongoing construction project. Hoff said “We were hoping the road portion of the project would be completed before the holiday weekend, but, due to unforeseen problems, that was just not possible.” However, the first mile of Mackay Island Road and the headquarters area will be open July 3-4, 2010.

Activities in these locations may include hiking, bicycling, fishing, and wildlife observation and photography. Please observe all “Area Closed” signs. The Headquarters and Mackay Island Road are located 1 mile and 6.2 miles, respectively, south of the NC state line on Hwy. 615, Knotts Island, NC and are marked by a large refuge signs. Knotts Island may be reached by traveling south on Princess Anne Road from Virginia Beach or by taking the free ferry from Currituck, NC.
