Best months to visit are October through April.  From June through August, visitors are encouraged to prepare for high temperatures, humidity, and biting insects. Tick repellent is advised year-round.


January
  • Good time for viewing wintering waterfowl and shorebirds in coastal areas
  • Small game hunting begins
February
  • Peak of bald eagle nesting
  • Osprey nesting begins
  • Night hunting for raccoons, Friday and Saturday nights during February

March
  • FAVOR - Annual Meeting and Refuge Openhouse
  • March 3 – 10:30-2:00. Join the Ranger-led paddle to North Key, Wilderness area of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. Call 352/493-0238, x223 leave your contact information. Only 20 will be permitted on the paddle. Sea kayaks, pfd, whistle and water are required.
  • March 6 & 13 – 10:00- 11:30. Meet at Shell Mound Trailhead for this walk back in time. Learn more about Florida’s ancient cultures than you ever did in school on this easy walk over the 6,000 year old Archaeological site.
  • March 12 - 10:30 – 12PM. Showing of Green Fire – Aldo Leopold and the Land Ethic of our Time, at Cedar Key Library. Call 352/493-0238 for more information.
