LAKE ZAHL NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE


DEER AND UPLAND BIRD HUNTING INFORMATION

Lake Zahl National Wildlife Refuge is part of the Lostwood WMD Complex and is managed by the Crosby Wetlands Management District. Lake Zahl is open annually to special season hunting for archery, gun, and muzzleloader deer; and upland game birds, including ring-necked pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, and gray partridge. Areas open to hunting during these seasons are depicted on the Refuge map (below). Applicable State licenses are required.

Following is a description of the seasons that apply to the hunts. Please note that Refuge seasons may differ from State seasons. For more information please contact the Crosby Wetland Management District Office, Box 148, Crosby, ND 58730, phone (701) 965-6488.


ARCHERY/GUN/MUZZLELOADER DEER HUNTING

The Lake Zahl deer hunting season dates are:

Archery Deer

The season dates for fall/2009 will be available in late August.

Gun Deer (Unit 3A1 permit holders and youth special season permit holders):

Youth Deer -The season dates for fall/2009 will be available in late August.

Rifle Deer (Unit 3A1) - The season dates for fall/2009 will be available in late August.

Muzzleloader Deer:

The season dates for fall/2009 will be available in late August.

 

All State rules apply, as well as the following Refuge regulations:

1. Foot travel only-vehicles are prohibited inside refuge boundaries.

2. Only temporary tree stands are allowed (stands cannot be secured by nails, screws, etc.).


UPLAND GAME BIRD HUNTING

The dates for the late season hunt for pheasants, grouse, and partridge are:

The season dates for fall/2009 will be available in late August.

 

All State rules apply, as well as the following Refuge regulations:

1. Foot travel only-vehicles are prohibited inside refuge boundaries.

2. Non-toxic shot is required for upland game bird hunting.  Hunters may not  possess lead shot while on the refuge.
