Bird watchers, anglers, photographers, hunters, and nature lovers all find refuge at Long Lake. Home to 289 species of birds and a variety of mammals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians, the Refuge is a mosaic of wildlife and the wild places they need.

Long Lake Refuge is one of over 540 national wildlife refuges across the country. These refuges are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a federal agency within the Department of the Interior. These lands were purchased for the conservation, protection, and enhancement of wildlife and their habitats. Long Lake also manages a Wetland Management District (WMD), a program that conserves wetlands and grasslands on private property in partnership with the landowner. Numerous Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA) managed by Long Lake are open to the public for wildlife viewing activities, hunting, and other recreational activities.
