in the south central part of the state, Long Lake Refuge is a haven
for wildlife and those who enjoy it. Bird watchers, anglers, photographers,
hunters, and nature lovers all find refuge at Long Lake. Home to 289
species of birds and a variety of mammals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians,
the Refuge is a mosaic of wildlife and the wild places they need. |

| Long Lake Refuge is one of over 540 national wildlife refuges across the country. These refuges are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a federal agency within the Department of the Interior. These lands were purchased for the conservation, protection, and enhancement of wildlife and their habitats. Long Lake also manages a Wetland Management District (WMD), a program that conserves wetlands and grasslands on private property in partnership with the landowner. Numerous Waterfowl Production Areas (WPA) managed by Long Lake are open to the public for wildlife viewing activities, hunting, and other recreational activities. | |||

EDUCATIONAL
TRUNKS |

Long
Lake Refuge has four educational trunks available for loan to local
educators or for home schooling. All four trunks are free to use
on a reservation basis and will be picked up and Wetland Trunk - this trunk shows students how wetlands and surrounding habitat are important to people and wildlife. It contains videos, books, puzzles, puppets, and games. All activities are listed in an educators guide along with additional resources. The activities can be adapted for any age group, but created primarily for 4th through 8th graders. |

| Prairie Trunk - this trunk teaches about grassland and prairie ecosystems. Designed for students in K through 12th grade, it includes an educators guide, games, hides, skulls, puppets and other activities that teach students about prairie habitats and the wildlife that live there. | |||
Endangered
Species Trunk - this trunk was
designed around the endangered species that are listed in North
Dakota, including the Gray Wolf, Piping Plover, Bald Eagle, and
Pallid Sturgeon. Books, cd-rom activities, hides, skulls, and
a real pallid sturgeon are among the props and hands-on tools
contained in this trunk to give students and teachers endangered
species information.Shorebird Trunk - this trunk will guide students through the habitat and other needs of the shorebirds that migrate their way through the prairie pothole region. Using reference materials, guides, props, puppets, and more, students will gain an understanding into the needs of the common and rare shorebirds found in this region. |
