Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge Complex

Long Lake is an alkaline lake that is up to 2 miles wide and 16 miles long. The Refuge contains 22,300 acres, 16,000 of which are lake bottom, with mixed-grass prairie, smaller wetlands, and cultivated uplands on the remaining 6,300 acres.

The Refuge was listed as a top 10 birding site by Wildbird Magazine. It was also recently designated as both a Globally Important Bird Area and a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network(WHSRN) site*. Long Lake was selected as a WHSRN Site because of its importance as both a breeding and migratory stopover site for more than 20,000, shorebirds, annually.
