Trails

The Friends of LPO and the Washington Trails Association are developing two new foot trails scheduled for completion in 2008.

McMEET Trail

The McMEET Trail (McDowell Marsh Environmental Education Trail) starts at River Camp goes around McDowell Marsh then to McDowell Lake and back. Part of the trail is a boardwalk over wetland habitat. The trail will be just over one mile long. The first half of the trail (from River Camp to the Lake) is wheelchair accessible. Difficulty level- easy. Friends of LPO have provided most of the volunteer labor. Target wildlife- bald eagle, osprey, warblers, red-necked grebe, barn swallow, Canada goose, muskrat and moose.

Mill Butte Trail

The Mill Butte Trail will be a loop that starts and ends at Refuge Headquarters. This trail will be just over 3 miles long and traverses dry forest habitat. The Washington Trails Association (WTA) hosted a week long work party last summer that completed the trail to the summit of Mill Butte. Friends of LPO also contributed volunteer labor. This summer the WTA will finish the trail work June 7 – 14. If you are interested in volunteering for a day visit their web site for contact info. The summit is at 2619 feet; difficulty level – moderate. The view from the top spans 360 degrees and is worth the hike.
