Because migratory birds are a primary Refuge concern, staff and volunteers collect a variety of bird-use data on the Refuge including bald eagle and osprey production, waterfowl and shorebird use, waterfowl production, and passerine point counts. With the assistance of Bitterroot Audubon members and the U.S. Forest Service, the Refuge also runs a constant-effort mist netting station that monitors productivity and survivorship of breeding passerine birds. The Institute for Bird Populations uses these data in combination with those from other banding sites to make broad regional estimates of species productivity and survivorship.
To report a bird band number please call 1-800-327-BAND. Collared geese, swans, or other color-marked birds can also be reported at that number.
