Threatened and Endangered Species

The management of threatened and endangered species is of key importance at the Refuge. Until 1999, bald eagles were listed as threatened. Fortunately, bald eagle populations nation-wide have recovered to the point where they have been removed from the endangered species list. Although bald eagles are no longer endangered, the Refuge still places high importance on protecting and providing habitat for the nesting pair of bald eagles that have made their home here since 1990. The Refuge staff will continue to monitor and manage the eagles under the 1994 Montana Bald Eagle Management Plan.
