Subject:  Proposed Revision to CITES Regulations

Background:  On April 19, 2006, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published proposed revisions in the Federal Register (FR Vol. 71, No. 75 pages 20168-20260) to the regulations that implement the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This is the first substantive update of the U.S. CITES implementing regulations in 30 years. The proposed revisions are intended to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to inform the public how to trade internationally in CITES-listed species.

Action:  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is accepting public comments on this proposed rule until June 19, 2006. The proposed rule and an accompanying fact sheet can be found at: http://www.fws.gov/international/.
