Migration Update
January 7, 2008
A few warm days last week melted much of the snow in the area. Daytime highs have hovered just above freezing, opening a few more areas of water on the refuge. No official survey has been completed in recent weeks, however a ballpark estimate of 15,000 Canada geese remains in the area.
Large concentrations of mallards remain, with flocks observed flying out to neighboring cornfields to feed on waste grain. A large number of bald eagles has moved onto the refuge, feeding on Canada geese, mallards, and whatever they can catch. Many other raptors, including golden eagles, rough-legged hawks, red tailed hawks, peregrine and prairie falcons, northern harriers, short eared owls, barn owls, and great horned owls have also been spotted hunting the refuges grasslands and wetlands.
The days are getting longer and before you know it, pintails and other signs of late winter fading into early spring will arrive.
